Here is an example of a photograph that Suzi has worked from, to
create a portrait tile.

This is how a tile looks, before the final (third) firing.  At this
stage, there are a minimum of three coats of under glaze on the
tile.  Once these layers are dry, an over glaze, which is purple, is
brushed onto the entire tile.  Great care must be taken, because
under glazes will move on the tile.  Once the over glaze has dried
for 24 hours, the tile goes into the kiln.  It takes nearly 8 hours
to reach the correct curing temperature of 1800F degrees.

This is how a tile looks, when it is removed from the kiln.  When
completely cool, it is inlaid into a piece of your choosing, from a
trivet/frame, to a hinged rosewood box, to a cork board, to a garden
stake, to a beautiful velvet lined jewelry box.  There are so many
choices, and if you don't find what you like here, contact us, and
we'll see what we can do for you.
